Services

INDIVIDUALS:
If you are looking for individual therapy, I provide a safe space to share your feelings; to better understand your emotional self. If you are experiencing relationship problems, feel stuck or blocked, anxious or depressed, we can work together to better understand the challenges you face. Sometimes we know that things don’t feel right, but can’t put our finger on it. Through guided exploration, we can discover underlying causes for these feelings, and develop a more authentic connection with ourselves and with others.

CHILDREN, ADOLESCENTS, TEENS, FAMILIES:
As an adoptee and adoptive parent, I have an informed understanding of the complex identity development of the adopted self.  Each normal stage of a child’s development has an age appropriate connection to one’s adopted identity development, and each succeeding stage may include more complex feelings of loss, grief and confusion. Sometimes these feelings are expressed as behavioral issues.  I work with children, adolescents and teens (individually, in family therapy, or in group therapy), to help them create meaning and a healthy narrative of this aspect of one’s multi-layered identity.

COUPLES:
Often times a couple will seek therapy when they are in crisis, and seldom before. At the outset, I work with a couple to create a safe and respectful space. I recognize that each couple’s relationship is unique, and we work together to increase successful communication and authenticity.  My theoretical approach is Bowenian and psychodynamic, and I am LGBTQ affirmative in all of my work.

WORKSHOPS and TRAININGS:
I offer twice yearly adoption learning workshops for children (7-9), adolescents (10 – 12), and teens (13 – 18) that focus on the unique developmental experiences that adoptees and their families may encounter. Peer group work can provide multi-layered therapeutic benefits. See homepage for current offerings.

I provide regular regular transracial adoption training for prospective adoptive parents at a local agency, and present on adoption topics for parents and the community. I am also available for private consultations for families.

GROUPS:

Lesli A. Johnson, MFT and I facilitate a quarterly support group for teens. TEEN AdoptCONNECT is a teens-only quarterly group. Parent consent and registration, in advance, is required. (See homepage to download flyers & registration)
